A Matter of Balance

Fall Prevention

Mercy Trauma Services offers an Older Adult Fall Prevention Program implemented through a grant from the Ohio Injury Prevention Partnership.  All of our Emergency Department (ED) patients 65 and older receive a fall risk assessment as part of their visit. If the patient scores highly on this assessment, upon discharge the patient will be given a “Fall Prevention Packet”. Home assessments are done with the help of area Fire/EMS personnel from participating departments. Grab bars, rug tape and night lights are given to patients free of charge to those who would benefit from using these devices.

In addition to the Older Adult Fall Prevention Program, Mercy Trauma Services will also be offering Tai Chi for Better Balance course later this year. It is another evidenced based balance course where older adults can come learn Tai Chi forms that have been proven to improve balance and reduce falls.

GEMS

The GEMS (Geriatric Education for EMS) course empowers EMS practitioners to help improve medical outcomes and quality of life for geriatric patients. To learn more about the GEMS program, click here.
