Have Worries Become Anxiety? Six Questions to Ask Yourself

How do you know when it crosses the line from merely stressful to a real problem? Though it’s not always easy to tell, there are some simple questions to ask yourself.

Our days are often busy, busy, busy. If you’re a parent, you may running ragged, trying to fit all the school and extra-curricular activities and obligations in with family needs, like dinner, errands, cleaning and more. Perhaps you are trying to care for an elderly mother or father. Maybe your financial situation has changed suddenly. All of these can cause stress or even provoke anxiety. 

So, how do you know when it crosses the line from merely stressful to a real problem? Though it’s not always easy to tell, there are some simple questions to ask yourself. 

#1 – Is worry taking over your life? In other words, is it becoming more and more difficult to concentrate on the things you need to do or to redirect your thoughts away from the worries? 

#2 – Do you feel wound up, restless, and have difficulty relaxing? 

#3 – Are you more irritable than usual? 

#4 – Do you get tired easily and don’t have much energy? 

#5 – Do you have muscle tension, aches, and pains? 

#6 – Are you having sleep problems, either difficulty falling asleep or having restless sleep? 

If your answer was yes to three or more of these questions for most days over the past several months, it would probably be helpful to talk with a professional counselor. Anxiety can be managed, often through several times of talking with someone who knows how to listen and provide help with life management skills. 

Occasionally a referral to your family physician is suggested, especially if physical symptoms, such as palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pains, or intense dizziness are a problem. In that case, short-term use of medication can be useful while learning to use anxiety management skills. 

It’s important to know that anxiety is very treatable and you don’t have to feel as though you’re losing your mind!
